Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
Do you work with young people aged 11 -18?
Are you concerned for them yet not mental health qualified?
Are your concerns in relation to one or more of the following?
…depression, anxiety, phobias, obsessions, self-harm, suicide, eating disorder, psychotic disorders, substance misuse (drugs and alcohol)…
KSL employs a number of the Youth MHFA instructors who are either in training or approved by MHFA England. Having helped organise and evaluate the Youth MHFA pilots for them we’re now bringing this programme to young people’s services.
Youth MHFA’s unique advantage over other courses is that it:
- Creates constructive learning space where participants explore conditions such as depression, suicide and self harm
- Teaches skills for dealing with difficult situations, providing the confidence to take the right action at the right time
- Has been tried and tested with positive results in other countries and successfully piloted in England (Wandsworth and Leeds)
- Is officially MHFA certificated and internationally recognised (in 16 countries)

Who is the Youth MHFA course for?
“Thank you for delivering your excellent training to some of NCB’s member organisations. I received a number of emails after the sessions from attendees saying how useful and enjoyable they had found the training. It was a pleasure working with KSL thanks to your professional approach, and was particularly useful to receive thoroughly composed course evaluation results following the training.” Emma Foxall, Voluntary Sector Support Programme Manager, NCB, 2011
MHFA doesn’t teach people to be therapists. It does teach how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial support and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. If you’re responsible for staff, students or interact with the public, MHFA is for you.
The course can be tailored (by addition) to meet the learning needs of participants from different professional backgrounds but is ideally suited to diverse groups. We will research into your needs pre-course so that we address your specific issues. Our training groups have included staff working or volunteering for NHS Trusts, independent service providers and community groups, local authorities, schools and colleges. The course is all for those without specialist mental health training, working in education, youth and community work, health care or social care, including residential, foster and day carers, and CAMHS support workers.

The Youth MHFA England Pilots
Pilot Youth MHFA courses were held in Wandsworth (London) and then in Leeds (Yorkshire) in spring 2010, after MHFA England obtained the license to adapt the programme for English services. A pilot survey was designed as an initial test of the English programme version’s content and structure and of how well it fits its local service context. 20 of the 36 pilot course participants completed anonymous online survey forms after the English pilots and the results have been supplied to MHFA England.
Pilot Evaluation Results
The course succeeded in engaging a very diverse group of staff in youth services and schools, who had not received any mental health training previously, in understanding, demystifying and initially-handling the mental health problems experienced by young people. Each session was reported as well structured for their learning. 96% of the sample agreed or strongly agreed that the programme met its aims and objectives; 72% agreed or strongly agreed that the programme was in line with local service practice.

We sometimes offer course places to individuals
We can always offer courses for organisations
Our standard fee for course places is £195+VAT per person. These rates include everything, including catering for the two days, manuals to take away and follow-up certification.
Organisations purchasing a course place for an individual to sample, which then go on to purchase the Youth MHFA course from us, will get the fee they paid for that individual deducted from our price.
Organisations can now purchase Youth MHFA courses for 6-16 people, tailored for their staff, volunteers or partners, for £1584+VAT per course in their own venues. Our organisational course rates all include pre-course and/or on-day registration and all other training administration.
If one organisation purchases a number of courses, e.g. for different area teams or local partners, we can assist them to become officially ‘kitemarked’ by MHFA England for a good mental health learning status, at no extra cost to them in the first year.
